(Not a Cat Question?)

cat loosing weight

Sent to Cat Experts May 15 01:58 PM

my cat is loosing weight and his hair is dull & dry looking. He is shedding alot but I thought this was just his winter coat coming off. He eats cat food;no table food. He is an outside cat and has been catching and eating birds (I think several a day. Once we caught him in the act we moved the bird feeder.) According to the vet he is about 5 years old. We recently had him neutered about 2-3 months ago and he started loosing weight after this. Could this be caused by all the bird eating, the neutering or something else?

Well as he is an outdoor boy he might be carrying a parasite load from the wildlife he eats or from fleas he may have picked up and groomed off himself.
He might also have an infection of some sort, or be diabetic, or have a thyroid issue.
Toxoplasmosis, feline infectious peritonitis and other diseases all can present with weight loss and shedding due to nutritional changes as one of the symptoms.
Your best bet is to bring him into the vet as the symptoms you list are ones that could be indicators of a serious problem - catch is which serious problem it is is hard to determine over the net!
Hope this helps!
