I have a three year old cat who was a pet shop rescue(was very small and ill when I found him). He has suffered from very sore, reddened gums his whole short life...the vet who treated him when I first got him tested him TWICE for both the Feline Lukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and the results came back negative both times...he finally told me that he was pretty sure the kitten had some sort of an immune system problem, but did not offer any solution...he felt it was probably an inherited condition and would just require monitoring...the cat acts very healthy otherwise, he has a good appetite and eats (usually soft food, but occasionally hard too) and his eyes, ears , nose etc, all are clear, his coat is thick and shiny, but his gums continue to be red and sore looking, and although he doesn't seem to "complain" I am certain that they hurt him....I am on a limited income and have not been able to keep up with his vet visits as frequently as I should have (what started as a $30 pet shop rescue has become an investment of a couple of thousand dollars)and I would like to ask what else I could do at home to help him with this problem...I crush and mix L-Lysine tabs into his food to help with his protein absorbtion, and have tried to brush his teeth, but he is understandably not cooperative with that...I have been shredded several times while attempting it and finally gave up...would having the teeth all removed help? I have read about antiseptic rinses....what about those? thank you for your help..
