Question

My female calico cat wets, or seems to mark the house with ...

Sent to Cat Experts October 16, 2006 6:10 p.m.

My female calico cat wets, or seems to mark the house with her scent, like a male, especially when there are other cats outside or near the house. She does this often and it really creates a problem for me. My other cat is a female tabby and does not exhibit this behavior. Both cats are indoor cats and never go outside. Do you have any knowledge why she would do this or what I can do????

Hi,

How old is your calico and is she spayed?

What makes you think she's 'marking' instead of just urinating in places other than the litterbox? Could you describe her actual behavior when she does this?

IS she using the litterbox for urination and defecation with no problem?

Thanks for any additional information you can provide!

Cher

My calico is 6 yrs old and spayed. And yes,she does use the litter box normally like she should. She has the run of the house and has window kitty sills in each room to look out, etc. She seems to exhibit this behavior when she is looking outside...running from window to window..checking to see who (cats or animals) are outside. Her body language will often change.. she maybecome excited or her hair stand up, etc... and she will often urinate right on the window sill or close to the window or door she just visited.

Hello again, and thanks for the further details!

Yes, it does sound like she's 'marking' as a result of the other cats/animals outside. This is an instinctive reaction and she can't really control it. She feels that 'her territory' may be threatened and this is her natural reaction.

I would suggestion two products which might help in your situation. The first is Nature's Miracle; this is an enzymatic cleaner which completely removes pet stains and odors from inappropriate elimination and/or territorial spraying. It's available in stores like Petsmart, Petco, etc., and also online:

http://www.petcarecentral.com/nm-155.html

When cleaned with an enzymatic cleaner, these areas should no long smell of her urine and she shouldn't return to them due to the former smell, and neither should her 'sister'.

The second product is called Feliway. This is a synthetic cat appeasing pheromone which is used to calm stressed/anxious cats, curb territorial marking, and inappropriate urination. Feliway comes in spray form and a plug in diffuser. From your description of the situation, I think both forms may be helpful to you. The diffuser looks like a plug in air freshener, but has no scent to humans.

If you spray the window areas where she normally sits when she sees these other animals, and the doorways she's marking, I believe it will make a positive difference. If you use the plug ins in the room(s) she frequents most, it will be beneficial. For more information on Feliway, please see:

www.catfaeries.com/feliway.html

If you'd like to keep the other cats/critters out of your yard/around your house, there is a product called 'scarecrow' which is a motion activated sprinkler system. For more information, you can look at this website:

http://www.dutchguard.com/SCARECROW-p-yard.html

This is just to give you the general idea; if you consider it, of course, comparison shop at home improvement stores and/or online.

I hope my suggestions were helpful, and please keep me updated on how things are going with your cats. Thanks!

Cher
